The Family: Ventura
First introduced in 1957, at a press conference in New York, the Ventura made history as the worldâs first electric watch, driven by batter power. It was designed by Richard Arbib, who was a famous designer of cars and also a designer of artillery for US military during World War Two. Notably, he said that the Ventura was based on a bomb design. The optimistic and forward thinking spirit that defined American 50s culture, is perfectly captured by the futuristic boomerang case shape. It has become an iconic design, which earns the Ventura a place in the horological history books.
The Ventura also has a place in the Hollywood history books. It was famously worn by Elvis Presley in the 1961 film, âBlue Hawaiiâ. Significantly, he did personally own one prior to the release of the film. The watch also features in the âMen In Blackâ film series, it has become an official partner of the series.
The Brand: Hamilton
Since its foundation in 1892, Hamilton Watch Company have developed a reputation for being a provider of accurate timekeeping. Hence why they earned the title of âThe Watch of Railroad Accuracyâ, as a result of their accurate pocket watches.
Hamilton earned a place in history, as they found themselves suppliers of watches to the US military in both world wars. The US Naval Lab invited the Hamilton Watch Company to create an American made chrono. There was a shortage of chronos available to the US Government during the First World War. Therefore they had to rely solely on European made pieces. For this reason Hamilton agreed in 1941 to undertake the work. Moreover, by 1944 Hamilton had produced more than 10,000 Chronometers in aid of the American War effort.
Hamilton have developed a close relationship over the years with Hollywood. They have featured in over 450 films, starting in 1951 with the Frogman watch. Other films include: Elvis Presleyâs in 1961âs âBlue Hawaiiâ and in â2001: A Space Odysseyâ. Hamilton have featured in films such as âInterstellarâ and âThe Martianâ.
In 2003 Hamilton moved their headquarters to Switzerland. They are still a global force within the watch industry. This is because they offer a combination of American heritage, Swiss workings and a touch of Hollywood flair.
